General Dentistry

What type of toothbrush should I use?

Whether your toothbrush is manual or electric, ensure the bristles are as soft as a cloud! Okay, maybe that's too soft, but you get the idea. We don't want anything too firm because that can be abrasive for your teeth and gums. Put those soft bristles to work twice daily for two minutes, and you will be in great shape!

Does flossing really matter?

I'm not sure you'll like my answer, but flossing is pretty darn important. Flossing ensures no remnants of your favorite snacks are left to start cavities or irritate your gums. If you don't love regular floss, try some floss picks to get into the habit!

What are signs I need to make an appointment outside of my annual cleaning?

I hope you don't need to see me beyond your regular exams and maybe the occasional whitening service, but if you do, these are some of the things you should pay attention to:

  • Mouth sores
  • Jaw pain
  • Redness
  • Swollen face or gums
  • Tooth Sensitivity
  • Broken teeth
  • Dry mouth
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth (not your typical coffee breath)

Don't wait until you are in pain! If your smile doesn't make you feel like a million bucks, there's no time like the present to explore options that can restore your health and confidence.

What makes your office different from other dentists?

At Superior Smiles, we emphasize preventative care and prioritize whole-person health because we know that your mouth truly affects your entire life. We work to provide our patients with exceptional care and a comfortable experience from start to finish. What do you mean when you talk about "minimally invasive dentistry"?

As the name implies in "minimally invasive surgery," minimally invasive dentistry uses techniques to alter your mouth as little as possible. We focus on saving natural tooth structure wherever we can and encourage patients to undergo treatment that does not require much grinding down or extracting teeth. You are born with the best teeth, so we do our utmost to keep your natural smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry

What makes me a good candidate for veneers?

If you have healthy gums and teeth and need to repair broken tooth structures or simply want to enhance the look of your smile, you might be a good candidate for veneers. We encourage you to build a relationship with a trained cosmetic dentist to make the veneer design, prep, and placement a seamless and enjoyable experience.

Why would I get veneers instead of just a whitening treatment?

If your teeth have deep stains that whitening does not seem to touch, composite veneers or veneers may be a good option. Other issues that can be solved with veneers are irregular tooth shapes, teeth spacing issues, gaps, tooth defects, or worn-down tooth structure.

What can I expect when I come in to get composite veneers?

When you come in for an appointment to get composite veneers, here's what you can expect:

  • Consultation and Design:  We’ll start with a thorough consultation to discuss your goals and examine your teeth. We’ll talk about what you want to achieve with your smile and determine if composite veneers are the right option for you. We’ll take a digital scan of your teeth to allow Dr. Reid to skillfully design your new smile. This process may take one or two visits so that we can work together to make any adjustments you'd like to your smile design.
  • Preparation:  At your next appointment, we’ll start the application process. First, we’ll prepare your teeth. This usually involves lightly etching the surface of the teeth to help the composite material adhere better. The preparation is minimal compared to other types of veneers, and anesthesia is rarely needed.
  • Application of Composite Material:  We’ll apply the composite resin in layers directly to your teeth. The resin is carefully sculpted to achieve the desired shape and appearance. This step is like an artist molding clay, ensuring each tooth looks natural and fits well with your smile.
  • Curing:  Once the resin is shaped perfectly, we’ll use a special curing light to harden it. This process bonds the material to your teeth, creating a durable, long-lasting surface. Finishing touches: After the resin is hardened, I’ll trim, shape, and polish the composite veneers to match the rest of your teeth. This step ensures that your new smile looks seamless and feels comfortable.
  • Final Check:  We’ll do a final check to make sure everything looks and feels right. You can take a look in the mirror and let us know if there’s anything you’d like adjusted.
  • Aftercare Instructions:  Finally, we’ll give you some aftercare instructions to help you maintain your new veneers. This typically includes tips on brushing, flossing, and avoiding habits that could damage the veneers, like biting your nails or chewing on hard objects.

Overall, the process is straightforward and usually can be completed in two to three visits. You’ll leave the office with a refreshed, beautiful smile!

What can I expect when I come in to get porcelain veneers?

When you come in for an appointment to get porcelain veneers, here's what you can expect:

  • Consultation and Design:  We’ll start with a detailed consultation to discuss your goals and examine your teeth. We’ll talk about your desired outcome and ensure porcelain veneers are the best option for you. We’ll take a digital scan of your teeth to allow Dr. Reid to skillfully design your new smile. This process may take one or two visits so that we can work together to make any adjustments you’d like to your smile design.
  • Tooth Preparation:  During your next visit, we’ll prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel from the front surface, roughly the same thickness as the veneer. This step ensures a natural fit and prevents the veneers from looking bulky. Local anesthesia is usually used to keep you comfortable.
  • Digital Scan Impressions:  After the teeth are prepared, we’ll take precise digital impressions of your teeth, which will be sent to a dental lab where your custom veneers will be crafted. This process ensures that your veneers will fit perfectly and look natural.
  • Temporary Veneers:  While your custom veneers are being made, we’ll place temporary veneers on your teeth to protect them and give you a preview of your new smile.
  • Fitting the Veneers:  Once your porcelain veneers are ready, you’ll come in for a final appointment. We’ll remove the temporary veneers and check the fit and color of the new veneers. Adjustments can be made at this stage to ensure they look and feel perfect.
  • Bonding:  After we’re satisfied with the fit, we’ll clean your teeth thoroughly and apply a special bonding agent to them. The porcelain veneers are then placed on your teeth, and a curing light is used to harden the adhesive, securely bonding the veneers to your teeth.
  • Final Adjustments and Polishing:  We’ll make any final adjustments to ensure your bite is correct and the veneers are comfortable. Finally, the veneers are polished to give them a natural shine.
  • Aftercare Instructions:  We’ll provide you with aftercare instructions to help you maintain your new veneers. This includes advice on brushing, flossing, and avoiding habits that could damage the veneers, such as biting on hard objects or using your teeth as tools.

The process of getting porcelain veneers typically requires two to four visits over a few weeks. By the end, you’ll have a durable, stunning smile that looks and feels natural!
